I just got a sword. I've wanted one for a while. I purchased a couple decorative pieces at a pawn shop for $15 each. They are not real though and all it did was make me want an actual sword that can do actual battle. I began looking around and as I expected, a real sword is CRAZY expensive. A bit dismayed, I kind of gave up the search.

A week or so later, I couldn't sleep so I decided to cruise the web for more info and swords. I was fortunate enough to stumble upon a web site called: The Sword Buyers Guide. This site is AWESOME! They have some excellent information on various styles of swords as well as a ton of info on the various armories. Even more important to me was that the site has lots of sword reviews with some impressive YouTube videos as well showing the guys putting the various swords through the ringer. It was great to be able to read all the specs on a specific blade and then see it in action against different strength and durability challenges.

After some intense research, I decided to order the Norman Sword from Dark Sword Armory. Oh, and did I mention that most all of the swords featured on the Sword Buyers Guide as well their very own sword store are $350 and under?!!!! Pretty cool. It's a great way to get some brutally durable blade to add to or start up a decent collection. Dark Sword Armory also had a really cool site and a great product! For years! And YEARS! I have had this damn song stuck in my head! I used to hear it when I was in first and second grade when the creepy Ice Cream Man would come by. I was afraid of him but I loved that Pied Piper's sweet melody. For years, it would pop into my head and I had NO way of finding out what the tune is called. Of course, today we have our "shazaam"s and our "soundhound"s to help out. So, one day for whatever reason I was tuned into Salt Lake City's Light FM 100.3 and it began to play!!!!!

At first, I just figured it was a Chris Cornell song that I was familiar with... until the chorus. I was impressed so I pulled out my pod to see who it was. Operator.

So you've probably heard of the FX series "Sons of Anarchy." If not, check it out, it's pretty good. Basically, the show follows the activities of an outlaw motorcycle club in a fictional city in California. The music featured in the show is solid and it's fun to download a song or two that I heard on the show.

For whatever reason, having watched the first 2 seasons and now getting into the 3rd, I have developed a renewed appreciation for Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society. Which is funny since, to my knowledge, their music has not been featured on the show. I guess it's no surprise that getting into a Harley Davidson mood in conducive to listening to BLS cause that's what I've been doing. If it's been a while since you've given 'em a listen.... do it

Australian Pink Floyd Experience

I love Pink Floyd. But for some reason I always forget HOW MUCH I love them. I forget how many albums they have and how Rad they ALL are. It is crazy to think of some of the things they were able to accomplish musically. There are so many different sounds that I forget that so many of my favorite songs cam from one band.

My dad, being the man he is, took me to see the Australian Pink Floyd show @ the Usana Amphitheater here in Salt Lake City, Utah. It was amazing. I loved it. In fact, like most rock shows, it made me tear up a bit. If you have the chance to check 'em out in your area, I highly recommend it.

For one reason or another, I had never heard this song before the show. But, it was one of the highlights of the performance.

Queensrÿche: Probably still My Favorite Band ever

Queensrÿche: American Progressive Metal Band. Formed 1981 in Bellevue, Washington.

I can distinctly remember hearing a song played for the first time on my local radio station while I was pumping gas at the local Maverick. The song was called, "Sign of the Times," and I remember thinking to myself that it was kinda catchy. Afterwards, the DJ mentioned that it was the latest single from Queensrÿche. I was sure I had heard that name before.

Weeks later, at my friend Scott Earl's house, we were watching rock DVDs and he asked if we wanted to watch a Queensrÿche DVD. I was shocked at how many of the songs I already knew and really enjoyed. The rest is history. One of the best shows I have ever seen was a Queensrÿche/Dream Theater show in Seattle. The day before I sold my last drum set, I played all the way through 4 of their albums.
Queensrÿche is most famous for their albums, "Operation Mindcrime" and "Empire." They are also responsible for creating one of my Favorite rock/metal logos... the "Trirÿche." The Trirÿche is the bat-man looking symbol you see above on the cover of their Empire album. I have painted this symbol on more than a few denim jackets and drum heads, as well as on the wall in my drum room.

If you ask me, Queensrÿche is one of the best bands around. Great writing, outstanding vocals and some of my favorite drums to play along to. Not to mention some of my favorite Guitar Harmonies. One of my fondest memories is the summer of '98 while working at Pizza Hut as a delivery driver. I remember making the most perfect Queensrÿche mix tapes ever with a couple live tracks added in. It was blue... and it was awesome.

Lemmy Kilmister- Born December 24th, 1945 in Stoke on Trent, England. Founding member of Motörhead. Doesn't get much more serious than that. Yet, after a show like that of Steel Panther, I can say that so matter how serious or not you may be, The Metal commands reverence.

Saxon- English Heavy Metal Band formed in 1976. Yeah, Saxon has been rockin' longer than I have been alive! That means that these guys have been around the block a time or two. They were among the Vanguard, carrying the banner of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. In the beginning, Saxon would share the stage with more established acts like that of Lemmy's Motörhead. While many people have never heard of Saxon, know who has? How about Iron Maiden? Maybe Judas Priest? Saxon not only had their place set the the British Heavy Metal Banquet, but they also heavily influenced many other bands including Megadeth and Metallica. There is no doubt that Saxon has earned their place on the Hallowed Ground of Heavy Metal with the best of them. So... bow your head... fold your arms... and enjoy

There is no question that this was the place to be in SLC tonight! Local Band The Street opened up the show. I always enjoy seeing these guys perform. Check out their myspace HERE. Check out some of their tunes and their album is now available on iTunes.

Steel Panther after the first song. They took about 5 minutes in between songs to strike poses for the camera. Talented musicians for sure. Hilarious show. Glam Rock Resurrection. Just imagine a mix between Zoolander and a Poison Concert.

My favorite Event Staffer of the night. He spent about 80% of his energy making sure to be right in my way for most of the night. Also, whenever the beach balls landed by him, he'd just leave 'em there instead of throwing them back to the crowd. Thanks Dude. You're a real peach.

If you Listen to the Radio at all, you may have already heard this song. I don't, so this was an exciting find for me. At first I wasn't sure if it was Black Stone Cherry (who is awesome). Definitely has a bit of that Southern Rock feel. You can check out their Myspace HERE. I was most impressed with the outstanding vocals, which can make or break a band's sound. You sprinkle in some pleasantly heavy guitar riffs and you have pretty great track. Give it a whirl... I think if you like Black Stone Cherry and Kenny Wayne Shepard you'll dig this song for sure.

Sevendust- My Favorite Addition to my Morning Playlist

Sevendust: American Metal Band. Est. 1992 in Atlanta, Georgia. Originally named "Tomorrow's Pain." Obvious Influences are: Faith No More and Living Colour.

Now, I LOVE a heavy Guitar and a Punishing Drum Beat as much as the next guy, but I still haven't fully embraced the "Cookie Monster" growly vocals of some styles of Metal. While Sevendust isn't completely growl free, they pull it off better than just about anyone I have ever heard. Why? It is mostly due to the fact that the Monsters are balanced out with some of the most focused, tight, bright and melodic vocals in the choruses.

Seriously, for those who might be tempted to give up after the first 3o seconds, do me a solid and at least wait until the first chorus is over. That's all I ask, and it's where they got me. I'm sold. These guys have taken the "Funk Metal" sound of Faith No More and Living Colour and taken it to a much heavier, darker and more powerful level. I guess I dig it so much because it is some of the heaviest stuff I have that always makes me smile.

If you love Sevendust already... then enjoy. If you have yet to see the light, I think you might be surprised by how easy to like this stuff is.

Hell Yeah. I lived in Brazil for a couple years, Rio De Janeiro to be exact, but I did get to stay in Sao Paulo for 2 months. Upon my arrival to Brazil, one of the first things to strike me was Brazil's passion... nay, Reverence for Metal. Iron Maiden posters, T-Shirts and Flags are as common a sight along Brazilian streets, as Paris Hilton is in the USA. It's no surprise then that it would only be a matter of time until some of Metal's Heavy Hitters would eventually begin to emerge from Brazil itself. Angra is definitely worthy of a consecrated seat at the Round Table.

Just got the Most Pleasurable A$$ Kicking of My Life

So, basically Lacuna Coil handed me my sorry hind-end on an Italian Metal Platter at the free show tonight at the Gallivan Center in Salt Lake City! The set opened strong and held the energy right until the very end. The set length was perfect too! Many a rock show has outlasted the crowd's energy by 2... 3... 7 songs, but Lacuna Coil kept it short, balls to the walls, and full throttle just long enough but left us all wanting more. And, hats off to them for not playing the cliché/fake Encore game. They packed the punch, told us that the last song would be the last song, and let us get on with our lives. Great concept!

I've got to hand it to them for playing the set like they really meant it. Lacuna Coil is not new to the metal scene. The band was formed in 1994 but, you wouldn't know it from the looks on their faces. I really felt like they were excited to be with us and had the enthusiasm of a college band playing their first big show. I definitely got the impression that they are truly passionate about what they do. Refreshing compared to the last Def Leppard show that I saw. I'm not sure DL even knew what city they were in and appeared to have put the show on auto-pilot. Whatever.

Lastly, it was killer to see such a great turn-out for a show like this. The more SLC can support great acts like this-the more great bands begin to look at Utah as a viable tour stop. I think we did a great job showing Lacuna Coil our appreciation and support. Can't wait to see them again!

Love Zakk Wylde! And the video below, from Black Label Society, does not disappoint. The band was formed around 1998 by Zakk and drummer Phil Ondich. While some consider BLS to be a Southern Rock/Heavy Metal Hybrid... I call it Hog Metal, because there is hardly a better band to listen to on a Motorcycle.

A little bit about Zakk himself. There are two easy ways to recognize him: 1. The Black & White Gibson Guitar pictured above. 2. If visuals are not available, the trademark "squeal" made famous by Zakk's time with Ozzy Osbourne (Check out Ozzy's No More Tears @ about 0:38 below for prime example) is a dead give away. Some call his sound a: "Classic Les Paul/Marshall Combo with high gain,"-Sam Jones. Whatever it is... I love it. And if music is allowed as a weapon in the battle of Armageddon, I'll be packing some Zakk. Born Jeffery Phillip Wielandt January 14th, 1967 in New Jersey, Zakk would become Lead Guitar and Co-writer for Ozzy Osbourne at age 19!

So, tomorrow begins my journey into the dark and sexy world of Hair School! Haha, and I couldn't be more excited! I'll be attending Paul Mitchell the School on about 45th south in SLC. The program takes about 15 months, during which I will be learning everything I need to know about styling, cutting, basic skin care and my favorite: The Straight Razor! Sweeney Todd Style!

To keep with the "all black" dress code, I had to fill in a couple holes in my wardrobe... which is fine, cause I love black.
Banana Republic Fitted Polo, G Star Raw Long-sleeve Button-up and BR fitted V-neck.
Commune Fitted Skinny jeans from Urban Outfitters, Rock & Republic Straight Leg Jeans and G Star Raw Weird Pant. I'm still on the hunt for a sturdy black belt.

Back to the Basics: All black Converse All Stars, one of the best ways to spend $35. I'll get some good use out of these at Metal shows and performances. Rock solid foundation to any metal wardrobe.

Next Wednesday, August 12th, (so many commas!) Italian Metal's premier Italian Metal band is coming to SLC which is amazing all by itself. Then you go and tell me that it's FREE! This is what happens when people pay their tithing. So, please join me! It's at the Gallivan Center.

So, this video kills me! Haha! I hadn't ever seen it until today and it's good to see the more personal/candid angle of a band that is usually a bit on the serious side. This song/vid is very different for Lacuna Coil but it's hilarious to see them messing around with other styles!

I'm so pumped for this show that I haven't slept much lately. And I noticed a huge rip in my Egyptian cotton sheets which tells me that when I have slept, it's been rough. So, from time to time I have the opportunity to join my friends of The Kaiizen Foundation for a road-trip down to Baja, Mexico to visit a local orphanage to hang with the kids and do some work. It's a great time and I usually come back a slightly less selfish and possibly, a slightly better person. Needless to say 17 hours straight in a car listening to the latest round of hipster-approved "underground" music that nobody knows about (except everyone that has ever seen an iPod commercial in the last 5 years), can take it's toll on a metalhead. But, I am quick to recognize that I am probably the only one in the car who wants to listen to Hotwire by Kix. So, I just wait till everyone is asleep to satisfy my rock-tooth.

This is called my favorite thing ever! Tacos al pastor with a Mexican Coke. It really doesn't get any better than this. I am a virgin so I can say that with the utmost sincerity.

This is just one of the kids at the orphanage that, for his age, can hand me my a$$ on a platter on the drums. Haha for real, these kids are pretty solid. Not to mention this kids grasp of self-branding. Enough to make Gene Simmons grin.

It gets hot on the way down. But it's nothing a little My Girls by Animal Collective can't cure (please kill me know).

Last but certainly not least. A rousing game of guess what just smacked the windshield. Heather won this round cause she had the best view. It was, at one point, a bird. So...

While I made my regular stop by Lacuna Coil's official website, I checked the tour dates, and to my dismay, the closest they would be coming to Salt Lake City was their show at the House of Blues in Vegas (Would be such a cool place to see them). So, I resigned myself to the thought that I would have to got another couple years without ever seeing Lacuna Coil in concert. Now, just so that we are all on the same page, I LOVE Lacuna Coil. They are not in my Top 10... but definitely Top 25.

Well... Dare To Dream! Lacuna Coil is coming to Salt Lake City! AND... It's FREE! Yeah, I know! This next Wednesday August 12th, at the Gallivan Center. Now, most of my closest friends are not Metal Heads, and do not enjoy the same music that I do (but some do... the awesome ones do). They prefer the Regina Spektor and Imogen Heap (more like EMOgen Heap) to Black Label Society and Sevendust. That's fine. But, I think it is fair to say that all my friends that don't love metal DO love Depeche Mode... right? Nod your heads. Yeah, everybody who wants to be considered cool by the hipster royalty will at least claim to like Depeche Mode. Well here is a great opportunity to expand your horizons. Or, if you are awesome, and you already like Lacuna Coil... See you at the Show! Ladies and Gentlemen... Lacuna Coil's cover of the Depeche Mode classic "Enjoy the Silence." Pretty Damn Good if you ask me.

Running Up That Hill- Metal meets the O.C.

If you are like me, you couldn't help but feel the raw emotion during the final season of The O.C. when Ryan, after Marissa's death, was FORCED to engage in the dark and violent cage-fighting underworld of Newport. If you did, you may also remember the song that was playing during that sequence. I remember it. And, I remember thinking to myself: "that's a cool song." Well, it is. And, while the original version is by Kate Bush, there are quite a few covers of it. My favorite is the "Placebo" version.

I found this version intriguing simply because it is by Gothic Metal band "Within Temptation." Not my favorite band in the world, but pretty good. As far as this version/video... when it fired up, right out of the gate I was thinking: "this really sucks." But, I kept watching. And now, after watching it 5-6 times, my conclusion is that it's walks very close to the edge of sucking... but it doesn't fall off. I dunno. I think it's an interesting take and is not the worst ever. I actually kinda dig it. And, I'm going to give "Within Temptation" the benefit of the doubt and assume that they have already thought of most of the criticisms I may come up with. I am also assuming that this version is exactly what they wanted it to be. In that case, if every aspect of this song is intentional and they liked it that way, it's interesting to get a peak into their style and interpretation of this song... blah blah blah... watch the video.

That seems to me to be the most appropriate place to start this wonderful journey. If you are like me, the name doesn't not ring much of a bell at first. What about the band Rainbow? No? That's fine... for now. But if you have ever claimed to be a metal-head or rocker while watching Bill & Ted's or playing RockBand or Guitar Hero with your hipster friends, this is a good place to start backing-up all your talk. Turn down your Bon Iver or Mates of State CD or push pause on your super niche Fiest album that makes you feel like such a trend-setter. Rock 101 is about to begin.

The video below is from Ritchie's latest project Blackmore's Night. Watch it. Now, before you start laughing, a little history on Mr. Blackmore's resumé.

Richard Hugh Blackmore was born 14 April 1945 in England. He was a founding member of both Deep Purple and Rainbow. Now Deep Purple need little in the way of introduction. But what some people don't know is that at one point or another, David Coverdale (Whitesnake) and Joe Satriani (Taught Satan himself the guitar) both served time in the band. Now not as many people have heard of the band Rainbow, but I'll tell you who has: Ronnie James Dio the alleged inventor of "The Slayer," (hand gesture made by making a fist, then raising your pointer-finger and pinkie) and front man of Black Sabbath. Last but not least, Ritchie was ranked number 55 on the list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time by Rolling Stone Magazine.

Side note: He also won the Dave Boyd Chester the Molester Mustache Award for 2003-2006.

Guilty Pleasure Bands-I'm a bit ashamed of...

These are the bands that I rarely admit to liking. These are the bands that embarrass me every time they pop up on my shuffle in the car. These are the bands that I secretly enjoy when all the lights are down and nobody is around.

1. Nickleback- Need I say more? Yeah, I have a couple of their songs on my iTunes. And when I'm alone, I crank 'em up and I love it. I started with their first two albums back in 2001. I still like some of that stuff.

2. Static X- Nothing like a bit of Push It in the morning. Or a bit of Cannibal to break the ice on an awkward first date. Ha! Nobody that I am close friends with like Static X as much as I do, so I usually enjoy them when no one is looking.

3. Evanescence- I know, I know. But they are SO close to being good. I definitely had better luck enjoying them B4 I heard Lacuna Coil. Basically, Lacuna Coil is everything that Evanescence tries to be. But there are some times when a little Evanescence is the only thing that will cure my itch.

4. Fergie- I guess I am not THAT ashamed that I like Fergie. I am not bashful when it comes to declaring my love for her... just her music.

Bands that I USED to HATE

1. John Mayer- I hated that guy and his stupid "You're body is a Wonderland," song. Then I saw a live performance and found out how talented he is on the guitar. Now I dig 'em.

2. Incubus- "Pardon Me," was my worst enemy in the year of 2000. I would hear it everywhere and I thought it was stupid. Then my girlfriend at the time made me watch their DVD, and I was sold. S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is one of my favorite albums to sing or play the drums to.

3. Metallica- It was a very long time ago that I was riding in the car with my then Foster-Brother Mike. I was in 5th grade it think. Mike was listening to Metallica and I was so pissed! I thought it was "devil-music." Mike, I was young and stupid. Now I'm older, and stupid... and past Metallica and on to Killswitch.

4. Godsmack- I'm still tempted to hate them, and when asked, I hesitate when saying that I enjoy a handful of their songs. What got me interested in them? I watched a few videos online of their drummer Shannon Larkin. That guys plays like his life depends on it. I respect the hell out of that.

5. Hoobastank- I still hate these guys from time to time. But once upon a time, a roomie of mine bought a new ipod and used MY computer to load it up with his CDs. Hoobastank was one of them and I was slightly intrigued. I definitely like these guys the most when I am locked in the drum room with the black lights on. Pretty fun stuff to play to.

6. Rage Against the Machine- You couldn't pay me enough to listen to them in high school. I actually didn't ever get into them until Audioslave came around. I loved Audioslave and couldn't find enough of their music to make me happy so I went back to RATM and found a bunch of songs I really like.

7. Journey- I still only have their Greatest Hits album, but I wouldn't even have that if it weren't for the show they played with Def Leppard in about 2007. I was definitely there to see Def Leppard rip it up and figured I'd just go a bit late to miss Journey's set. I wasn't late enough and caught the last 2/3 of their show. They blew me away! I had no Idea how talented Neal Schon is. I love him now.

8. Radiohead- I have no excuse. I was just a dummy. All I really knew was Creep. I still don't really like that song.

9. Maroon 5- I just really love jamming on the drums to these guys! Great beats.

10. Nirvana- I still hate Nirvana. Overrated and dumb. I love Dave Grohl though.

Good... Not Great: Within Tempation

I have tried to get into Within Temptation for quite a while but I had a hard time finding anything that I was REALLY excited about. Until... This song. Pretty good. Not my favorite. But worth a listen. Then, I stumbled upon Within Temptation's "Black Symphony," and fell in love with the track: Overture (Live). The rest is okay.

Anyway. This is a decent song with a decent video. So, enjoy.

Jenny Lewis/ Bon Iver Show @ the Gallivan

I think this picture of Josh and Co. says it all. Now I knew from the beginning that this was not my "style" of music. And to tell you the truth, I was VERY impressed by Jenny Lewis' performance. Lots of talent and energy. But Bon Iver was Bo-ring for me. And it's not like I can't appreciate slower more mellow music. I LOVE Brandi Carlile, David Gilmour and Faunts. So, I left and got sushi. Just look at the expressions on their faces! They are children for crying out loud!

This is a picture of my view for a majority of the show. Bear in mind that I was standing on a 6-8 inch concrete step at this point. So, this guy is pretty tall. I should have been flattered that he insisted on standing directly in front of me instead of even a couple inches to either side. There is something about the shape of this head that calls for punching.
If I had a penny for ever v-neck in this crowd I'd buy myself the most tricked out PT Cruiser on the block! Nice kids, and while they might smell better than the crowd at Cruefest (arguably) this is definitely not my crowd. As I had imagined from the beginning, the highlight of the event was spending time with my good friends and seeing some that I don't get to see very often. All in all, fun night.

Sushi and Jazz!!! Great night!

I was invited out to sushi night with my friend Vince. Several others cam along and we headed out to Naked Fish sushi on 100 south in Salt Lake. Food was good but I was surrounded by so many attractive women that I would have enjoyed eating the shag rug from my parents room. It's a real cool place and I'll go back for sure.

Next, we stepped next door to a little place called "Speakeasy." I fell in love instantly. Live jazz music on Thursday nights! They have a small patio out back that is perfect for transitioning a lovely lady from the more noisy main floor into a more intimate place to take care of business. The look and feel of the place is clearly in a 1920's vein. The bartender wears a cap and suspenders. It's just dark and warm enough that it kind of reminded me a bit of the red light district in New Orleans. I can't wait to go back asap! I loved the look and feel of the place from top to bottom! Seriously, I could spend hours just sitting back and taking it in.

Myself and many of my close friends have spent considerable time in Brazil. Specifically, some of us had the pleasure of living in Rio De Janeiro. I will never be the same. There is something about Rio. It's in the food, the juice, the air, colors, sounds, sunrises, sunsets, and if you don't know what I am talking about, the MUSIC will take you there. At least partially. It's magic... seriously. It will literally possess you. Right now, I'm feeling a bit sentimental and I miss Rio more than all my married ex-girlfriends combined. "Indie" rock and "Record Labels"- Some Clarification

I have had some EXCELLENT response to the last post about the "Performance Tax," as well as plenty of questions. First off, the post in question was admittedly broad in some of its statements and makes some significant generalizations for the sake of brevity. Second, while I am in complete opposition to the performance tax (although it's not like commercial radio is without its flaws as well), I not only recognize, but also respect the need for artists to be able to create but then to protect and control the distribution of their work. That is why I am writing this post. To clear a few things up...

It all begins with whose side you are on. If you are for the artists, then the good news is that it has never been easier to create success as an independent musician! The "gate-keepers" to distribution and "middle-men" are fading away. Opportunities that once belonged only to deep pockets are now available to anyone with the drive to do all the work themselves that until now, was done by the major labels.

Major Record labels are not all inherently EVIL. In fact, several larger labels are proactive, innovative and forward-thinking. If not for their expertise and leverage, we may not have had moments in time like Led Zepplin or AC/DC Live At Donington. If not for his patron, Tchaikovsky wouldn't have given us the Nutcracker. But, the game has changed... the power has shifted and it is hard to argue that the needs and wants of the artist and their audience at large are best served by major record labels anymore.

"The system, which used to be closed off, is now wide open for anyone who wants to participate. The traditional players in the music industry were like tollbooth operators, and the price of admission was your music. Now, you don't have to ask anyone's permission, and the cost is minimal."-The Indie Band Survival Guide pp. 1.

It is also important to recognize that most of these discussions are in reference to "major" record labels as opposed to "indie" labels or just record labels in general. But I'll tell you RIGHT NOW that most of the labels you think are "indie" may have at one point been but, due to the structure of the industry, were probably forced at some point to sell themselves to the BIG BOYS. For real, I can't tell you how many times I have been sure that a label is "indie" only to find that, on the brink of extinction, Warner Music Group scooped them up. These days, major labels have teams of experts doing whatever it takes to look as "indie" as possible. But, among the thistles, there are innumerable indie labels and bands that are innovative, honest and have creativity and art in their hearts and priorities.

I guess that it really just depends on what it is that you are looking for. Many bands and musicians will only ever feel like they've succeeded if they are opening for Brittney Spears and on the top of the "Billboard" charts. Or for others, the true mark of success is getting "signed." That is fine. There is nothing wrong with that... seriously (Most of my favorite bands are). AS LONG AS YOU UNDERSTAND THE PRICE. First, do yourself a HUGE favor and read "The Problem With Music," by Steve Albini HERE. It may be a rude awakening for you. BUT, the good news is that once you get past the fear that: you can't do it without them and their money- you will see that the forecast for indie music is not only bright, but in many ways BETTER than any contract they may try to sell you. We will definitely continue to discuss this topic as well as other related topics in future posts, but for now, consider the following examples:

How many times during your younger years would you parents enforce their policies with the phrase: "While you are under MY roof..."? Lots? Enough that you'll hear it in TV, movies and other popular media until the end of the world. Why? Because that is how it works. When you rely on someone for something you couldn't or didn't provide for yourself, they are entitled to a certain amount of control over you. And if you step out of line, there is the very real possibility that they will take it away.

What about this picture? You are recently married. Your parents are of a more humble background while your spouse's family is significantly wealthier. Rather than starting from scratch, you opt for the assistance of their family. Their parents end up providing you both with your first car and perhaps even a house. Often times they do this because their son or daughter (your spouse) is their little angel and deserves the best. You feel at times that you have "stolen" their precious angel and wonder if they will ever really find you worthy. Driving their car and living in their house, you wonder what it would have felt like to have started your own life with your spouse in your own house (while perhaps much less extravagant). Well, you better believe that come holiday time, or naming the baby time that many important decisions are frustratingly out of your hands. You find yourself longing to establish some boundaries and declare your independence. (Maybe not! Maybe everyone is always on the same page and you are living the dream.)

Well, if you think that working to be worthy of the attention of major labels to someday be chosen for their money and power (what a weird way to look at it!) is any easier... you're wrong. If you're "lucky," they may invite you to their party... but the price of admission is: your music, creative control and the rights to copy and distribution FOREVER. Ever heard of Courtney Love? She said: "The band owns none of its work... they can pay the mortgage forever but they'll never own the house."

This involves all of us! Including YOU! Performance tax

I am tired of old industries refusing to fully adapt to their changing markets! This is their JOB! We pay them to stay on top of their game. You wonder if the Major Record Labels are outdated? They are still called "RECORD" labels for crying out loud! Now that the rules have changed, they cry fowl and want government money!!!! Enough is enough.

Not unlike some auto-makers, some major record labels have refused to accept that things have changed. What WE want and how we get it is not up to them anymore. In the past, those with the most money and power decided who got played on the radio and who was 'popular.' Indie bands could never have afforded to record and distribute their own albums. They would never be able to afford to pay radio stations tens of thousands of $$$$ to play their music. And without the funds to tour, no one outside of their home town would ever know that they existed! So, deep pockets would choose which bands deserved to record, tour and get played on the radio. Anyone else that was not 'chosen' by record companies was forgotten.

Now WE decided who we want to hear. With the advent of the internet we listen to whoever WE want, whenever WE want. The cost of recording has come WAY down and distribution is free! ANYONE can post their music or videos on myspace or youtube. Which means that bands who could have never toured in the past ARE touring any time anyone clicks their music or video online! A guy in his basement in Farmington, Utah is being noticed by people in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I know because they have emailed me! And as far as record sales, most would rather buy 2 or 3 songs on iTunes than purchase the whole album on a CD. Any band can upload their music to iTunes and distribute it themselves.

The execs have lost control, and rather than adapt to the needs and wants of their customers, some major record companies want to continue doing everything on their terms at their price.

How? They want to TAX the radio stations that are playing THIER music! Gimme a Break!

It's called: "Performance Tax."

Quick Economics lesson: IF you want to discourage something: TAX it. If you want to encourage something: Subsidize it. Why would Record labels want to TAX their distributors?

What is a performance tax?
A performance tax is a fee that record labels want the government to impose on local radio stations simply for airing music free of charge for listeners.

In recent years, the record labels have seen sales of albums decline as more listeners opt for digital downloads. However, radio remains the number one promotional vehicle for music – it’s not responsible for the label’s resistance to the digital age, and it shouldn’t be on the hook to fix it. Radio already provides between $1.5 to $2.4 billion dollars annually in music sales for artists and record labels. By pushing a tax on local radio, record labels are biting the hand that feeds them.

Trying to make a Living- Get a REAL job.

Not too long ago... a friend of mine asked me: "When are you going to get a 'real' job?" This got me to thinking about the variety of jobs that I have had over my lifetime and I decided to make a list.

1. Paper Route- I delivered the Clipper to anxious readers in Farmington. The worst part was waking up at 4am to roll and rubber-band all of the papers.

2. Edit Technologies- I was an industrial Print technician assistant.

3. Mike Schaff Airbrushing- I worked at lagoon as an airbrush artist by the "Colossus." I would paint t-shirts for couples that featured naked silhouettes in beach scenes with their names in the sunset. I was 16. Once, a hispanic family asked me to paint 8 shirts that said,"Brown Pride." I had to keep telling people that they weren't for me.

4. Pizza Hut- I started as a cook and shortly made my way to the cut-table. As if that weren't enough for most ambitious teens, as soon as I turned 18, I went on to be a delivery driver. This was at the height of my Queensryche obsession and I would listen to my favorite mix tape in my Nissan SEV6 all night long. P.S. the illuminated Pizza Hut sign made me an easy target for high school bullies that could spot me a mile away... again and again. Joanne, who I think I asked to prom 3 years in a row (we went together once), worked here for a short time. She was a vegetarian and her brother, my manager, would have her make all the "meat-lovers" pizzas.

5. Pineview Builders- I worked as a carpenter for a while building houses along the Wasatch front. Our foreman was a big guy with red hair and beard that we called sasquatch. I leaned most of what I know about swearing and sex from this job. I also learned that,"if it's broke, get a bigger hammer." so...

6. Olde St. Rose Restaurant and Gift Shop- This was an old church in Layton that was converted to a restaurant where I worked as the "handy-man." I would do odd jobs around the place painting or fixing things for food. Joanne, the quintessential high school crush that I would have sacrificed all my household pets for, worked there as well. I had frosted tips and never got anywhere with her. so...

7. Structure- On a dare, I went into Victoria's Secret to apply for a job. When I got one, I didn't ever figure out what the secret was, but I did find out that Structure was a part of the same corporation as VS. I shortly transfered to the Crossroads Mall Structure location in Salt Lake where I would eventually meet the lead singer for Lynch Mob. I would also develop a crush on my manager Emily. Emily, if you are reading this... call me.

8. Mission in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

9. Olde Towne Catering- While I was in Brazil, my mom and sister had started their own catering business and had landed a contract catering Citi Group's lunch at the layton call center. This is where I would meet Casey, who would later show me the true meaning of Truth or Dare in my uncle's hot tub. She would go on to be affectionately know by the nickname,"undies girl." That day I had woken up a boy... but I went to bed a man. Casey, if you are reading this... call me.

10. Beyond Fitness (Gold's Gym)- During the short time that I had a membership to Gold's gym, I was approached by the guys the manages all the personal trainers. He offered me a job as a trainer. I asked if I needed to be certified at all and he said no, he'd teach me everything I needed to know. After a week, I was wearing the Beyond Fitness polo with the collar popped and life was good. I also began to recruit others to work with us. The criteria that I was given went something like this,'look for good-looking flexible girls... then sign them up. I'll teach them the rest.' Finally, after about a month, I was Promoted to "Head Trainer." Again, I was the "Head Trainer" at golds gym! If you know me well, this is a funny story.

11. Copelands Sports- This was one of my favorite jobs hands down! I began working in the Board Shop building skate decks in the summer and selling snowboards in the winter. It was great! Then I moved my way up to the "Outdoors" department selling camping good and skis! After that, it was on to the Ski Shop, where I got to use the heavy equipment to wax, grind and tune skis and snowboards. This was great because my usual day consisted of sharpening my Samurai Sword on the ski grinder, listening to Steve Vai and Watching Karate Kid on VHS for hours on end. Finally, with such a sterling record of service, I was promoted to the Bike Department! Here I would usually just work on my own bikes, listen to music and make music videos on my Mac.

12. Tucanos Brazilian Grill- This was a no-brainer. I learned portuguese in Brazil and the selection of ladies that work at Tucanos was as choice as the top sirloin. So, I signed up and became a meat-server. It was easy because you don't have to take any orders for drinks or deserts, you just walk around with a huge knife and a hunk of meat on a stick. When people want what you got, you pull over and slice 'em off a piece. After a while, I became the "Lead Server." This meant that I was in charge of prep for each shift, making sure that we had enough of each meat to serve for the night, and sometimes I could help run the grill. Only down side was when I somehow managed to cut my forehead with my knife while at a table and actually got my blood on a dude's shirt.

13. BYU Custodial- This job was pretty cool. Only thing was that it started at 3 am. Other than that, it was great! Walking around, listening to Def Leppard and Porcupine Tree all by myself, it was pretty chill, and as soon as you get your work done, you can go. Easy. I worked exclusively cleaning up the basement of the Joseph F. Smith building.

14. Banana Republic- This was by far one of the most professional places I have ever worked. I don't have any jokes to tell about this place. I loved it. Everyone there was awesome. I started as a salesperson and made my way to working on the visual team that would create all the displays for the store. This was where I met Larissa. My banana angel. She was the only girl to literally "take my breath away." All I ever wanted was to keep her safe and warm. But, she had a boyfriend, and I'm pretty sure he had a pager on his belt (this was 2006). I couldn't top that. Larissa, if you are reading this... well, come over. We can watch The Notebook together.

15. Contender Bicycles- This was where I have worked until recently (2009). Great job! They always took exceptional care of me. Awesome location too. It is right at the corner of 9th and 9th in SLC. You have Great Harvest on one corner, Barbacoa on the right and the Coffee Garden just across the street. Oh yeah! and the Tower Theater is right there too! I got to meet people that will be my friends for years to come by working here. Good times.

16. Celebrity Limousine- Yeah, I was a limo driver. Ha. It was awesome. The hours sucked. 4 am pick-ups at the airport and weddings till 1 am. Overall, I loved the experience and hearing Dumb and Dumber jokes all day. Insisting on carrying couples luggage to the honeymoon suite so that I could see inside the room was probably my favorite part. That, and eating left-over treats from the receptions. By far, the coolest honeymoon suite that I saw was at "The Inn on the Hill," just south of the Utah State Capital.

More Cowbell! Cowbell Confusion:

So, I am assuming that just about everyone I know has seen the Will Ferrell "more cowbell," skit on SNL. If you haven't, check it out. Chances are that you have been pretending to laugh a lot of jokes at a lot of parties that refer to this clip. And, if you find that you don't get invited to a lot of parties, this may be one of the reasons why. But a lot of people have had a couple questions about this video. So, here are some answers and some interesting perspective on the controversial cowbell.

First, in the skit, Christopher Walken plays the role of Big-Time record exec. Bruce Dickinson. This fictional character is NOT to be confused with the very real Bruce Dickinson, lead-singer of Iron Maiden. In the clip, Walken's character is portrayed as helping to produce the song, "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," by Blue Oyster Cult. BOC insiders claim that in fact, Walken's character is meant to portray the actual founder, manager, song writer and producer for BOC, Sandy Pearlman. While there actually was a record exec by the name of Bruce Dickinson that worked at Columbia records, he did not have any involvement with "(Don't Fear) The Reaper." Although, we would later work on the band's Greatest Hits album.

Second, some have wondered about the prominent presence of the cowbell in the actual recording in the first place. Sometimes, people really do have a fever, and the only cure is MORE COWBELL. It may well be that the cowbell was used where and when it was in the song simply because it sounds good. That's cool... but here is a fun perspective on way many bands use it.

Consider this:

When recording, the vast majority of bands will use a "click-track" in their headphones that helps them to consistently play the right tempo and stay on the beat as much as possible. The click-track is not a part of the actual recording, but is simply provided to the musician as a reference beat to play their part to(you probably already knew that).

Sometimes, when you are recording you have a problem with what is called, "bleeding." This just means that somehow, a sound is being picked up by the recording microphones that shouldn't be. This can happen with the click-track. When a drummer sits down to record his parts, he will often be literally surrounded by microphones on each of this drums and cymbals. If the click-track in his headphones is too loud, it may "bleed" and get picked-up by one or more of the very sensitive mics around him. Well, sometimes a cowbell can be an EXCELLENT way to mask or cover up some bleeding of the click onto the actual recording.

Some Classic examples of brilliant cowbell articulation:

"Welcome to the Jungle"-Guns 'n Roses: at about 3:23.

"Reach for the Sky"-Firehouse: at about 1:10 going into the choruses.

"River of Love"-Lynch Mob: full-throttle cowbell almost the whole time!

"Girl Money"-Kix: If I had a nickel for every time he hit the cowbell!

"We're Not Gonna Take It"-Twisted Sister: during the intro.

"Dance the Night Away"-Van Halen: cool cowbell groove in the intro.

"Got No Shame"-Brother Cane: classic 4 count up front and heavy during the chorus.

"Photograph"-Def Leppard: heading into each chorus.

"Shake & Tumble"-Firehouse: no-fear cowbell exploitation.

Still Waters Run Deep... or whatever. Kip Winger

Kip Winger. Nuff said? Perhaps. For some, the first thing that comes to mind is the jail-bait anthem of 1988 "Seventeen." For others, the name brings nothing but a blank stare. But, for a select few, the mind travels to a more excellent place... the fist-pumping call to irons: "Battle Stations," from the Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey Soundtrack (or "Rare and Unreleased"). But hold on. Before you laugh or roll your eyes, writing Kip off as just another big hair glam-rock has-been... a bit of history.

1961, Charles Fredrick-Kip Winger is born in Denver, Colorado to 2 jazz musicians. He is introduced to classical music in his ballet class (!) and at age 16, begins a personal study of the greats. That same year, as the teenaged Kip sent a demo tape to Alan Parsons, he could never have expected that he would some day wind-up singing lead vocals for The Alan Parsons Project. As if that weren't enough, after studying composition in New York, Kip would go on to share the stage with Alice Cooper as his bass player! It wasn't until 1987 that Kip left AC to focus on his own project that would come to be known as the "Winger" we all know and love.

When Winger went the way of the buffalo as most 80's Metal bands have, Kip was only just beginning his career as a solo artist. It was in New Mexico that, face-to-face with personal tragedy, Kip released 3 solo albums before settling down in Nashville to begin work on his 4th solo creation: From The Moon To The Sun. Which is why we are gathered here today.

Personal vocals with an intimate feel like that of Peter Gabriel, and an occasional guitar slide recalling a David Gilmour-Pink Floyd, this work has the variety and story-telling feel of concept album. In fact, the track What We Are reminds me a bit of Kevin Gilbert's landmark Shaming of the True concept (A long and complex story for another day). And, by the end of the disc, I feel more like I've finished a movie than an album. A third of the tracks have found their way onto a playlist of mine entitled: Rainy Day. Strings, piano, 12-string guitar... you name it, this album has probably incorporated it somehow.

If you pride yourself on the diversity of you music library, and you are looking for something completely unexpected and different, this album is worth a shot. - Dave Boyd

Where Have I Been?! New OSI Album!!! Insane!

I am on another planet right now listening to the latest album from OSI (Office of Strategic Influence). This album has done nothing but blow me away from beginning to end! If you have never heard of this project before, this is an excellent place to start! If you have, you will NOT be disappointed by this latest release entitled "Blood."

Named after a US government agency that had originally been created to generate pro-American propaganda in the turbulent post-911 climate, OSI was created by Guitarist Jim Matheos of Fate's Warning. Enlisting the iconic Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy as well as Keyboardist Kevin Moore of Chroma Key (he was also DT's first keyboardist) all that was needed was a bassist and someone to take up the mic. Sean Malone of Gordian Knot and Cynic was chosen for the bass position and Moore, who had been recording scratch vocals for the project, seemed the appropriate choice to finnish out the album behind the mic.

Mix in a couple cameos from other members of the Prog community like: Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) and Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth) and it would appear that things couldn't get any better. That is... until you get Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree, King Crimson) on drums for this most recent album!!!!

This guy has come to be one of my favorite drummers to date! While in interviews, Harrison expresses that at heart he has yet to really consider himself a Progressive Metal drummer (definitely one of the most influential and forward-thinking jazz drummers), his contribution to "Blood" has made this my favorite OSI album yet! - Dave Boyd
